Low Level Walking

Status:Active, open to new members
Coordinator:
Margaret Phillips Tel: 07484 644563
Group email: Low Level Walking group
When: Monthly on Friday mornings 10:00 am
2nd Friday of the month

We walk on the second Friday of each month. Where possible we start at a pub/café at 10.00am where we usually have lunch at the conclusion of the walk.

Our walks are 2.5 to 3 hours long depending on underfoot conditions (occasionally can be muddy!) and distance, usually 4 to 6 miles. We walk over varied terrain and in varied weather conditions, so appropriate walking clothing and footwear are essential. Walking poles may be useful.

Most walks are local, some might be slightly further afield. We walk, talk, learn, laugh and share. Group members take it in turn to lead a walk so our walks are varied and interesting. New members are not expected to lead immediately. Regular walkers should expect to offer at least one walk per year. Help will always be available for planning and checking out walks.

The Walk Leader will carry the group’s basic First Aid kit.

We car share where possible, walkers make individual transport arrangements with each other.

We are not accompanied by dogs, except a guide dog or assistance dog, mainly because walks pass through fields with cows and/or sheep in lamb, also where wild birds are nesting.

Walkers must be fully paid up members of U3A

For further information please contact the current coordinator.

We look forward to seeing you.

Programme for 2026

Friday 12th December - Rhewl, Lady Bagot's drive
A huge ‘Thank You’ to Helen for organising and leading the lovely walk that completed the Low Level Group’s 2025 programme. A record turnout of participants who all enjoyed the 5 miles route from Rhewl village. The views of the Clwydian hills partially draped in cloud followed by the sun made it a beautiful, scenic walk on a mild December morning.

We walked along a mixture of tracks, footpaths, fields, woodland and quiet country lanes. From Rhewl the path ascended gently uphill via a track and footpaths through fields to enter the woods above Lady Bagot's Drive. We dropped down to Lady Bagot's Drive walked alongside the Afon Clywedog and crossed the footbridge at the mill where a ‘Team’ photo was captured by Des. We then joined a quiet lane, took a track towards Pen y Graig farm where we were well within earshot of extremely loud shots being fired within the Rhewl Firing/Shooting Range before heading back to Rhewl. Pleased to report that having ‘counted them (us) all out and counted them (us) all back’ all 28 walkers returned safely to ‘base’ – Phew…! Lunch was enjoyed at The Sugar Plum Tearoom.

Thanks to All volunteer Walk Leaders throughout the year for organising a range of interesting routes. We walkers have played our part too – walked, talked, worked up an appetite and rewarded our efforts with good food.

Wishing everyone a joyous Christmas, Happy Walking and all good wishes for 2026.
Nadolig Llawen.
From January the Low Level walking Group Coordinator will be Margaret Phillips.
